Sometimes good design just comes from the heart...

Last week I was really happy to discover how much Geo Art is spreading around the world! 

Using smartphone application people can create an image using their GPS signal. It traces their movements and translates it onto a map allowing people to create their very own bit of art in the real world. Some of the images that people uploaded were ambitious to say the least! I spotted someone tracing out a bow tie and a dog walking a pig! But there was one in particular that I was taken back by...

Payam Rajabi decided to surprise his girlfriend Clare by riding a 27 mile heart-shaped route through San Francisco, tracking it with his GPS. He had recently moved from Toronto to start a new job, so had been away from his girlfriend for a few months and wanted to do "something a little different to surprise her on Valentine's Day".

The possibility of drawing shapes on a map based on the path you ride encouraged Payam to give it a go. He said that he and his girlfriend were always "really fascinated by maps and they've been a common point of interest throughout [his] relationship." So a heart shaped cycle route on Valentines day made perfect sense. It was a gesture that went down well and unexpectedly struck a chord with many across the world.

There are plenty of apps for smartphones that you can use to track a route of your own and share with others so why not give it a go yourself? As Payam says; "sometimes good design just comes from the heart..."
